Winter weather is tough on all skin, but when you have a skin condition like psoriasis or eczema, it can be especially damaging. These five tips will help you keep your skin healthy all season long.

  1. Moisturize. This doesn’t just mean applying your preferred ointment during the day and especially at night. Your home and workplace will also get drier during the winter season because the relative humidity drops. Offset the dry air with a humidifier.
  2. Skip the long, hot showers. Hot water dries out your skin. But if you’re like us, there’s nothing better than a warm bath in the winter. Adding an oatmeal bath mixture to your tub, as well as some moisturizing oil can help soothe irritated skin. Just be sure to lather on your favorite moisturizing cream after your soak.
  3. Stay healthy. Many medications prescribed for eczema and psoriasis are immunosuppressants, which can prevent your immune system from fighting off common colds, as well as the flu. But eczema and psoriasis can be flare up when you get sick. Keep yourself healthy by avoiding those who are sick, staying hydrated, washing your hands regularly and sticking to your vitamin regimen.
  4. Manage your stress. Eczema and psoriasis can also flare up when you’re stressed out. Schedule time to relax and recharge every day.
  5. Dress in cotton. Cotton fibers are soft and breathable. Cotton clothing won’t irritate sensitive winter skin. Dressing in layers will also help you adjust to temperature changes so you don’t overheat, which can cause flare ups.
